Why We Collect a Security Deposit

A security deposit is held as a safeguard against non-payment, potential damages, extra charges (like fuel or mileage overages), or other expenses that may occur during the use of the SimpleCar service. Unlike a down payment, the security deposit is intended to be returned to you in full, provided that there are no issues or additional charges associated with your SimpleCar rental.

When We Collect a Security Deposit

We collect security deposits during the onboarding process, not the application process. This means that we only require the deposit once you have been approved as a SimpleCar member and before you receive your vehicle.

When Will I Get My Deposit Back?

You can expect to receive your security deposit back within 3-5 business days after you've returned your vehicle. We initiate the refund process promptly to ensure you have access to your funds as soon as possible.

Will the Entire Security Deposit Be Returned to Me?

While we always try to return security deposits in full, there are instances where we may withhold a portion or the entire amount for specific reasons:

  • Fuel Level: If your SimpleCar is returned with less than a full tank of gas, the cost to fill up the tank will be withheld from your security deposit.

  • Mileage Overages: Exceeding the allotted mileage limit will result in charges deducted from your security deposit.

  • Major Damage: Significant damage to the vehicle beyond normal wear and tear could lead to deductions from your security deposit.

  • Smoking: Smoking in the vehicle incurs cleaning and restoration fees, which can be up to $350 and will be taken from your security deposit.

  • Parking Tickets/Toll Fees: Occasionally, we may receive last-minute toll fees or parking tickets associated with your rental. Any applicable fees will be deducted from your security deposit.

  • Overdue Balance: If there is an overdue balance related to your subscription fee, your security deposit may be used to cover the balance.
